120577191_8A question that comes up almost daily in my practice is clients complaining of feeling bloated, sick, constipated, diarrhoea, cramping, wind, pain, reflux, tired, rashy, grumpy…or any combination of these. They are all sick of feeling this way, and wondering what could be causing it.

In many cases, it is possible that food intolerance is at the root of the problem. There are two main branches of food intolerance that I work with, being irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and food chemical intolerance. It is important to remember that intolerance is different to an allergy. Allergies are immune reactions to specific foods. Intolerances do not involve the immune system, they’re triggered when nerve endings are irritated, and thus causing symptoms.

Regardless of if you are FODMAP or food chemical intolerant, you will need to undertake an elimination diet (either FODMAP or food chemical). Breath testing is available for clients with FODMAP intolerance, and should be discussed with your dietitian if this is an appropriate option for you. Whilst on this diet, you will need to consume only foods which are allowed on the diet, wait for any symptoms to subside, then challenge one by one. This can be a complicated, frustrating undertaking, as usually your ‘normal’ way of eating will need to change.

The positive outcomes of undertaking the elimination diet and challenge process are fantastic though, as you will be able to determine what is causing your symptoms, then tailor your intake to ensure you stay symptom free!

It is wise to complete these elimination style diets under the guidance of a dietitian who specialises in these areas. It is often a complicated process, and your dietitian can assist you with providing the most up to date research in the area, along with advice that is uniquely tailored to you.

Personally, I find this area one of the most rewarding to work in. Comments of 'I can't believe how much better I feel!' never get old, and it's awesome to be able to make such a tangible difference in your client's life.
