After my very simplistic 31 second explanation about autoimmunity, I thought you needed something more substantial.

Here's a nice animation trying to explain the immune system in action in the gut.

Disturbances of normal immune function in this area play a role in autoimmune disease including inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis, reactive arthritis, spondyloarthritis & ankylosing spondylitis.

These diseases can cause arthritis, enthesitis & spondylitis.
