Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Giant Cell Arteritis Explained How They Differ and How They Connect

How can this event help me?

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) are two inflammatory conditions that often appear together and can have a big impact on day-to-day comfort, mobility, and long-term health. Knowing the early signs and understanding how these conditions relate can make a meaningful difference in getting the right care at the right time.

In this live online event, Rheumatologists Dr Kate Celkys and Dr Simran Kaur will walk through the key features of PMR and GCA, why they sometimes occur together, and what effective treatment and monitoring usually involve. This session is ideal for anyone wanting clearer guidance, whether you’re newly diagnosed, supporting someone who is, or simply hoping to understand these inflammatory conditions in more depth.

Join Kate and Simran for a practical discussion where they’ll cover:

  • Understanding PMR: The hallmark symptoms, how it is diagnosed, and why morning stiffness and shoulder or hip pain are so characteristic.
  • Recognising GCA: The common warning signs such as headaches, scalp tenderness, and visual changes, and why prompt assessment is essential.
  • How PMR and GCA connect: How the conditions relate, why they sometimes appear together, and what this means for treatment planning.
  • Treatment pathways: How corticosteroids and other therapies help control inflammation, what to expect during treatment, and how progress is monitored.
  • Living well with PMR or GCA: Practical strategies for managing fatigue, maintaining function, and supporting overall health during treatment.

This session is ideal for anyone wanting to better understand PMR and GCA and feel equipped to navigate these conditions with confidence. Join us on Wednesday, February 18th at 8:00 PM AEDT for this informative live virtual event. We welcome your questions and discussions to help make this a supportive and engaging experience for everyone.
