BJC Patient Code of Conduct
Purpose
BJC Health is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all patients, families, and staff. The medical professionals and staff at BJC Health adhere to a code of conduct that ensures respectful and professional behaviour. In return, we ask that visitors, patients, and accompanying family members follow the BJC Health Patient Code of Conduct outlined below.
Scope
This Code applies to all patients, their families, visitors, and any individuals who accompany patients during their time at BJC Health.
Code Requirements
Patients, their families, visitors, and any individuals who accompany patients are expected to:
• Attend scheduled appointments on time or notify BJC Health in advance if unable to attend.
• Show respect and courtesy toward all staff members, other patients, and visitors.
• Treat everyone within BJC with kindness, avoiding aggressive, hostile, or disruptive behaviour.
• Never engage in any form of harassment, discrimination, or bullying toward staff, other patients, or visitors.
• Follow instructions from healthcare providers, respecting their expertise and guidance.
• Adhere to all BJC Health policies, procedures, and guidelines, including health and safety protocols relating to patients.
• Follow any hygiene and infection control measures, such as handwashing or mask-wearing, to protect others.
• To ensure a comfortable and respectful environment for all, we kindly ask that patients maintain a reasonable standard of personal hygiene.
• Inform staff immediately if experiencing any symptoms that may pose a health risk to others.
• Provide accurate information about their health history, symptoms, and medication.
• Ensure that financial obligations for services provided are met promptly.
• Understand that inappropriate or disrespectful behaviour may lead to restrictions on access to the facility or services.
• Respect and care for the facilities, equipment, and property of BJC Health.
• Avoid consuming food and beverages in clinical areas unless medically necessary or approved by healthcare staff.
• Keep noise to the minimum when in the waiting area and refraining from loud conversations or noise from mobile phones and other devices
• Dispose of waste properly and keep shared spaces clean for the comfort of all.
• Share any feedback or concerns about their care or the facility with BJC Health management directly, rather than with other patients or in public forums.
• Understand that BJC Health will take all concerns seriously and work to resolve them promptly and professionally.
BJC Health has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, including but not limited to:
• Sexual harassment – inappropriate touching of our staff or other patients, discussing matters of a sexual nature, asking intrusive questions regarding our team or other patient’s relationship status’, persistent request for dates, requests for personal information, or jokes of a sexual nature.
• Verbal harassment – threatening, insulting, scolding, excessive yelling, or aggression towards our staff or other patients.
• Discriminatory harassment – harassing another patient or member of staff based on age, disability, race, sex, intersex status, gender identity and/or sexual orientation.
Breaches of this policy
Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in:
• A discussion with BJC Health staff or management.
• Limitation of access to certain facilities or services.
• Further action as deemed necessary by BJC Health, in line with our commitment to a safe and respectful healthcare environment. This may include termination of services.
Variations
We reserve the right to vary, replace or terminate the policy from time to time.
