Telehealth Appointment Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I not able to “start a video call”?

The browser you may be using is not up to date. You may need to update both your computer/phone operating system and the browser that you are using.  You may also want to try different browsers by copying and pasting the link we provided you. We recommend using Google Chrome even if you are using a Mac.  Firefox and Safari should work but they can be less stable at times.

How do I improve the quality of the video call?

A good internet connection is required. Video consultations require good download and upload speeds (2 Mbps is preferable both ways).  A back up internet option is great to have just in case the primary source fails. For some, tethering (connecting) their phone’s 4G network to their computer or device is the backup.  Using a desktop computer or laptop is best. This should allow for the best video call experience. A web-camera, speakers and microphone are necessary too. These should be built in on many of the newer devices used these days. You can also buy these as accessories if you wanted to enhance the experience.

What if I am running late for my appointment?

Continue to “start video call” and join the waiting room. This notifies your practitioner that you have entered. It may be helpful to also send your practitioner an email or message that you are running late.  Feel free to also contact our reception team on 1300 252 698.

What if the practitioner I am about to see is running late?

Your practitioner will send you a message whilst you are in the virtual waiting room on the healthdirect video call. Thank you for your patience.

Is this video call secure?

Healthdirect video call was developed on behalf of the Australian Department of Health and various other state health jurisdictions.  The healthdirect video call service follows the applicable Australian Government Information Security Manual for cyber security guidelines and safeguards privacy by leaving no digital footprint.

How much internet data will I use?

A video consultation uses less than half of the data compared to watching a YouTube video in High Definition. This equates to approximately 230MB on a mobile device, and 450MB on a PC for a 20 minute call, which is similar to Skype or FaceTime. Data use increases when there are more than two participants in the call.

Do I need to pay extra for a video call?

No, you do not. It is all included in the price of the consultation.

If I haven’t pre-paid a deposit for my consultation, how do I pay after having my appointment?

Don’t worry, BJC’s reception team will contact you to sort this out.
