DEXA Scan - Bone Densitometry Test
This technique is pain-free, accurate and has very low radiation—even lower than the radiation involved in a Chest X-Ray. DEXA scanning can then be used to monitor osteoporosis to assess for deterioration or improvement after treatment.
Since April 2007, the government, having recognised how widespread osteoporosis is, has agreed to fund DEXA scanning for all people over the age of 70.
Other people who should be screened include:
- Patients on long-term Steroid treatment
- Anyone with a Fracture that occurred without much trauma
- Patients with conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Chronic Liver or Kidney Disease, Hyperthyroidism, Malabsorption and Hypogonadism
BJC Health has installed a Lunar Prodigy Bone Densitometer capable of producing high-quality DEXA scans at our Parramatta clinic. This service will be entirely BULK BILLED for patients with an appropriate medical indication, as well as a doctor’s referral.
Please be advised that the DEXA machine has a weight limit of 150kg, therefore we are unable to provide this service for anyone weighing over this limit.
