Happy Exercise Right Week!

If you weren't aware, this week is a part of an annual nation-wide campaign. Both celebrating the great work that Exercise Physiologist's do whilst also encouraging more Australians to #exerciseright!

So in honour of this week, I thought I'd give you my top 7 reasons to either start exercising, continue exercising or look for ways to get more of the good stuff in!

1. It reduces your risk of many chronic illnesses

Did you know that physical inactivity is a primary cause of many chronic conditions? There is substantial evidence now that regular physical activity can prevent and delay chronic diseases like Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, obesity, stroke as well as some types of cancer.

2. It can help your sleep

Our physio Tim has written couple of great blogs speaking about sleep and why it is so crucial to good health. If you struggle with sleep, consider adding regular exercise into your week as we know it can help the quality of your sleep.

3. It's awesome for your bones, joints and muscles

If you keep moving regularly, it helps your musculoskeletal system stay supple and strong. Lifting, walking, running and many sporting pursuits all become much easier with some regular (strengthening) exercise.

4. It's a mood booster

Physical activity stimulates the release of various hormones and brain chemicals that can leave you feeling happier, more relaxed and less anxious.

5. It can help you manage your weight

A great diet and regular exercise are a powerful combination when it comes to losing and/or managing your weight.

6. It helps your energy levels

Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your heart, lungs and cardiovascular system to work more efficiently. Once your cardiovascular fitness has improved, you typically will notice that you have more energy to tackle daily tasks.

7. Its good for your brain too!

If the physical benefits aren't getting you excited, remember that exercise can improve brain function, and help maintain memory and thinking skills. Exercise can cause the hippocampus ( part of the brain that’s vital for memory and learning) to grow, which increases mental function in older adults.

So although I've presented you my favourite 7 reasons toe exercise, I could have gone on and on! I appreciate my bias, but exercise is seriously one of my favourite things to sell. It's just so so good for you!!

So to those of you already of the exercise train.. WELL DONE!!!

And for those of you yet to start, or who have fallen off the bandwagon in recent times..NEVER FEAR!

An enthusiastic Exercise Physiologist is never far away who can help you learn how to #exerciseright. It's never too late to get started and all those benefits are just around the corner.
