Bone Densitometry

This technique is pain-free, accurate and has very low radiation—even lower than the radiation involved in a Chest Xray. DEXA scanning can be then used to monitor osteoporosis to assess for deterioration or improvement after treatment.

DEXA scans are far more accurate and precise than the simple heel ultrasounds performed by some pharmacies. DEXA scans are preferred by most experts over another method using CT scanning technology because the results obtained with DEXA scans are more validated and relevant. In addition, the DEXA technology uses much safer levels of radiation.

Since April 2007, the government having recognized how widespread osteoporosis is, has agreed to fund DEXA scanning for all people over the age of 70. Other people who should be screened include:

  • Anyone with a Fracture that occurred without much trauma
  • Patients on long-term Steroid treatment
  • Patients with conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Chronic Liver or Kidney Disease, Hyperthyroidism, Malabsorption, Hypogonadism

BJC Health has installed a Lunar Prodigy Bone Densitometer capable of producing high-quality DEXA scans at our Parramatta site. This service will be entirely BULK-BILLED for patients with an appropriate medical indication, as well as a doctor's referral.
